Altha Orina Odom, beloved mother, from Midland, Texas, died following a long illness on Thursday, June 14, 2012. She was born in Trinity, Texas, to Aaron and Mettie Campbell; following graduation from high school she attended secretarial school in Houston, where she met her husband, Stephen (Steve) D. Odom, a newly-minted Boy Scout Executive. After a whirlwind courtship, they were married six weeks later. She served many years at his side as a loyal, loving wife supporting his activities for the Scouts, moving with her husband’s 30 year scouting career from Houston to the Texas Panhandle and subsequently to West Texas.
She was a member of Memorial Christian Church, where she was involved in a number of activities, including the Christian Women’s Fellowship, adult Sunday school, and food pantry. In her later years she traveled all over the world with a group of senior citizens called the “Young at Heart,” for which she often acted as tour leader.
Pursuing a life-long hobby, Altha was for many years a member of the Midland Genealogy Society, serving one year as the organization’s president.
She was also a leader in her daughters’ Girl Scout troops and Boy Scout Explorer Post. Altha was a proud grandmother of two grandchildren, enjoying many hours with them as they matured into adulthood.
Her husband Steve, and brother Eugene Campbell, predeceased her by several years.
Altha is survived by her daughters, Linda Hughes and husband, John of Crowley, TX, and Elaine Lohrman and husband, Bill of Rockville, MD; her two sisters, Lorene Hightower of Houston, TX, and Marie Bunker of Deer Park, TX; her two grandchildren, Stephanie Hughes of Ft. Worth, TX, and Stephen Hughes of Crowley, TX; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins living in southeast Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Buffalo Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America of Midland, 1101 West Texas Avenue, Midland, TX 79701.
