Alice Margaret Hicks McCombs, 75, of Midland, Texas died Saturday 27th October 2018 from complications of lung cancer. She was born in Texas City, Texas on 25th November 1942. Her parents were John Pinckney Hicks of Iola, Texas and Alice Marguerite Buchanan of Midland, Texas. She spent her childhood in Navasota, Texas.
She attended Midland High School, and Monte Cassino in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and graduated from Judson in Scottsdale, Arizona. After graduating she worked briefly as a model in Houston.
She married on 24th August 1960 in Reynosa, Mexico to Stephen Benningfield of Tulsa, Oklahoma. She had one child from that union. She remarried to Don McCombs of Hobbs, New Mexico on 18th July 1964 in Dallas, Texas. She had four children during that marriage. She had five daughters.
In 1966 she moved to Las Vegas, Nevada before moving back to Texas in 1973. She lived in Houston briefly before settling in Caldwell, Texas for three years. She moved back to Midland in 1976. In Midland, she worked as a receptionist for Lynch Chappel law firm and Midtex of Midland. Later she worked in sales at Sakowitz and Dillards.
She loved reading mysteries, gardening, eating out, and playing with her small comfort dogs; at some point she realized that meant the dogs were all about their own comfort, which she then gladly provided to them. She became a proud member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She was a descendant of a Texas patriot who fought and died at the Alamo. She had a strong Christian faith. She attended Midland Christian Fellowship where she worked at the men’s luncheon for years. Then she attended Cornerstone Church where she sang in the choir and worked at the men’s luncheon.
In 1993 she survived a car accident that took the life of her daughter and grandson. She courageously fought back to enjoy life with her loved ones. She was predeceased by her husband, Don McCombs, her daughter MaryAnn McCombs Flora, her daughter Shelley McCombs Andrews, her grandson Alec Kirkpatrick, and her older bother Ivon Lee.
She is survived by her children, Alice Benningfield, Valerie (Randy) Crook, and Dona McCombs Shaw all of Midland; her grandchildren, Josh (Tiffany) Crook of Hollywood, California, Collin Crook of Culver City, California, Kelly Crook of Lubbock, Christopher (K.C.) Kirkpatrick of Taiwan, Evan Andrews of Midland, Jon Andrews of Austin, Melissa (Daniel) Shelton of Midland, Max McCombs of Midland, Nathan McCarty of Midland, and Kate Shaw of Midland; great-grandson, Ethan Kirkpatrick of Taiwan; siblings, Joan Sullivan of Navasota, Texas, John (Linda) Hicks of Midland, Carson (Elizabeth) Hicks of Midland, Sister-in-law, Patricia (Don) Fair of Lake Forest, California; and many nieces and nephews.
Service will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, 8th November 2018 at Ellis funeral home in Midland, Texas. Burial service will follow at Resthaven Cemetery. Richard Spencer will be officiating. Max McCombs, Nathan McCarty, and Collin Crook will be honorary pallbearers. Services entrusted to Ellis Funeral Home in Midland, Texas.
