Al was the Salutatorian of Midland High School in 1939. He graduated with his degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas in 1943 and became a Professional Engineer. During World War II, Al volunteered and, following Officer Candidate School, served in US Army Intelligence. He was awarded a Bronze Star while with the 86th Infantry. After his service, he worked for his uncle, Fred Fuhrman with Fuhrman Petroleum Corp., and as an independent oilman.
Al and Mary Theresa Elsas married in Dallas in 1949. They had two children, Claire Vogel-Camargo, RN of Austin (married to Frank) and Robert Allen Vogel, MD of Midland (married to Debbie). Al is also survived by Mary, his wife of 68 years, grandson Jeremy Shaw Vogel, Esq. of Washington, DC, and several cousins. Al was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Paula Fuhrman Vogel, his sister Hilda Vogel, his granddaughter Gina Ann Vogel, and brother-in-law Oskar Leo Elsas.
A proud Midlander, Al supported many local causes, including Midland Memorial Hospital and the Vogel Center at Manor Park. He was a Rotarian and served on several boards, including the YMCA (where he led the “Run for Your Life” class), the Fuhrman-Vogel Center (Senior Link), and Manor Park. His honors included Optimist Man of the Year and Philanthropist of the Year.
The family is grateful to Doctors Shayeb, Ganta, Miller, and Miro and the staff of Midland Memorial Hospital for the excellent care they provided.
