Ruth Alberta Nelson-Beckett passed away peacefully at age 98 on October 2, 2023. She was born in and spent her life in Middletown, Ohio. Education began in a one room school house. Eventually graduation at Trenton High School. She and Meredith Nelson married in the early 1940’s. She lived on Thomas Road for 72 years, in the home she loved, built at the edge of the woods in the country northwest of Middletown.
Alberta is predeceased by her second husband, Harley Beckett. She is survived by three children with her first husband, Meredith Nelson; son, Rick Nelson; daughters, Brenda Nelson-Garlow (James Garlow), Linda Nelson; grandchildren, Renee Nelson (Dave Kubic), Dennis Moore, Shelley Hoffman (Japeth Hoffman), Sean Hackett, Sarah Hackett (Daniel Rutledge) and three great grandchildren.
Ruth’s death is predeceased by sisters, Audrey, Margaret, Barbara, Georgia; brothers Webster, John, & Alfred.
Ruth was a dedicated homemaker, accomplished seamstress and mother. She was a devoted mother, attending school activities and baking for church, school and family events.
During World War II she worked at the Office of Price Administration which managed price, rent controls and ration cards.
She worked many years as bookkeeper for the family-owned Myers Construction Company and assisted a number of seniors in their homes. Whatever she did she always did selflessly with thoughtful attention to detail and sincere devotion. Ruth loved her work, was dedicated to anything she worked on and genuinely cared for those she was doing it for.
She took great pleasure in hosting or helping at family picnics, including her turn with the homemade hand-cranked ice cream. She enjoyed helping others, doing it discretely without expecting attention or anything in return. Everyone knew Alberta could be called on for anything needed. She enjoyed being a guide to help nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
She was always working on something because she loved to stay busy. She enjoyed working on crossword or picture puzzles. She took great pleasure in gardening and baking. She enjoyed choir singing, serving her church, traveling and camping with family. In her earlier years, hobbies included bicycling, horseback riding, photography and hiking. She was Den Mother, Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, church treasurer, youth ministry leader and Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of the Women’s Missionary Society.
More than anything she left her children with a great set of ethics, principles and values to live by while setting an impressive example to aspire to.
Visitation will be 11-1pm, Friday, October 13, 2023 at Breitenbach Anderson Funeral Home, 517 S. Sutphin St., Middletown. A Funeral Service will follow at 1pm. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Madison Township, OH.
