Mark was born on December 23, 1950, in New Riegel, Ohio, to the late Elmer and Pauline (Snyder) Theis. He graduated from New Riegel High School in 1968. Afterward, he served in the United States Navy from September 1970 through June 1971 and was honorably discharged. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Mark worked for the United States Postal Service until retirement.
After Mark was discharged from the Navy, he met Elizabeth Cook, a patient in the Newport Naval Hospital. The couple married on July 28, 1972. Elizabeth was the love of Mark’s life. He was loyal and patient. Mark was determined to turn Elizabeth’s dreams, and the dreams they shared, into reality. He supported Elizabeth through her own health challenges and cared for her until she passed away in November 2021. Mark deeply missed Elizabeth.
Mark was a kind, gentle, and hardworking man who cherished his family. He showed his love by not only providing for them but also working on special projects for the children he and Elizabeth cared for, whether biological, foster, neighborhood, or daycare children.
Mark enjoyed researching and reading his Bible. He also enjoyed listening to worship music, along with an occasional Simon and Garfunkel, “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” His faith in God was strong, and Mark desired his family and friends to know the God he loved. Mark faced his illness with courage and found natural solutions that extended his life beyond the doctor’s expectations.
Mark loved the farm where he grew up and visited it as often as he could. It was the standard for life, in many ways. In a recent visit to the area he was able to enjoy picking black raspberries with his Sister Anne.
Mark is survived by his two sisters: Mary Rose (Marvin) Boes and Ann (Glenn) Ardner; his brother: Matthew (Sande) Theis; his sister-in-law: Linda Theis; his 4 children: David (Andrea) Theis, Heather (Chip) Theis, Beth (Brad) Russell and Kris (Dan) Taylor; his many grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Elmer and Pauline Theis; his wife: Elizabeth Theis; his two brothers: John Theis and Luke Theis.
A gathering of family and friends for Mark will be held Friday, June 23, 2023, from 10 a.m. to noon at Gebhart-Schmidt-Parramore Funeral Home, 508 E. Linden Avenue, Miamisburg, Ohio 45342, followed by a funeral service at noon. Burial will follow at West Memory Gardens in Moraine.
The family would like to thank the caretakers, staff of the nursing home, and the hospice for their compassionate care of Mark during his final days.
Mark will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather or papaw, brother, and friend. He left behind a legacy of love, faith, and strength that will live on in his family. May he rest in peace with his beloved Elizabeth in heaven.
