Walter William Glass, Sr. was called home to God May 16, 2022 in the presence of his family. Born in Bluefield, West Virginia, he would have been 93 years old August 1st. He is pre-deceased by the love of his life and wife of 66 years, Josephine A. Glass. He is survived by his three adoring children Walter W. Glass, Jr. (Maria), Richard R. Glass and Linda Johnson (Jon) as well as seven grandchildren Elissa (Edwin), Melanie (Mark), Jeannie, Casey, Britney, Jon Jr. and William; four great grandchildren Eddie, Olivia, Zach and Mikey plus countless other family members and friends. He was the fourth of five children born to Mayo Ball and Carther Glass. His parents, sister and brothers predeceased him. Walter proudly served in the United States Army in North Korea from November 1951 to December 1952. He was first sergeant of Company A, 116th Combat Engineer Battalion, served three years in the U.S. Army Reserves and received an honorable discharge. Walter received numerous medals for his military service including: U.S. Army Commendation Medal for action above and beyond the call of duty; United Nations National Defense Service Medal; Ambassador for Peace awarded by the Republic of Korea. He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Organization, The Graybeards and a member of Local American Legion Post 98. Walter retired from the Miami Herald in 1992 after close to 42 years which followed years of working at the South Dade News Leader and print shops in Homestead and Florida City. It was at one of these print shops where he met Josephine and knew immediately she was the one for him. He instilled in his children a strong work ethic and always said, no matter what you choose to do, always do your best. Family was everything to him and Josephine. He will be sorely missed but has left our hearts full of love. Visitation will be Sunday, May 22, 2022 from 6-9PM at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn South, 11655 SW 117 Avenue, Miami. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30AM on Monday, May 23, 2022 at St. John Neumann, 12125 SW 107 Avenue, Miami. Interment to immediately follow at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn Park North, 3260 SW 8 Street, Miami. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in the name of Walter William Glass, Sr. (Memorial ID 22968776) to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
