He was born on July 22, 1927, in Matagalpa, a place he visited often in his native country of Nicaragua. Sofonias studied Pharmacy and Chemistry and was the founder and owner of Droguería Rocha SA (Nicaragua). He married his beloved wife, Dr. Aurora Rocha in 1956. They recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.
As an avid reader, Sofonias’ love of books expanded his wealth of knowledge on a vast array of subjects including Literature, History Religion, Poetry, and of course, baseball. His love for the sport was reflected in his collection of baseball caps. Sofonias, (Fofo) to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren also spent quality time playing cards with family members who happily accepted the challenge and quite often the defeat. He always left the table a richer man in more ways than one.
Dr. Rocha is survived by his wife, Dr. Aurora Rocha, of Coral Gables, his children Maria Adelina Rocha Turner and her husband Ian of Montreal, Roberto Rocha and his wife Pamela, of Coral Gables, Margina Rocha Pino, and her husband William, of Coral Gables; 6 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Sunday, August 27, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Caballero Rivero Funeral Home, 3344 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33135. Funeral Mass will be Monday August 28th at 9:30am at Church of The Little Flower, 2711 Indian Mound Trail, Coral Gables, FL 33134. Burial will be on Monday August 28th at 11:30am at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery, 11411 NW 25th St, Doral, FL 33172.
The family is requesting that In Lieu of Flowers to donate to the St Joseph's Indian School for Orphan Children, a cause patronized by Mr. Sofonias Rocha. This can be done as follows:
