Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her devoted spouse Robert Newman, of Boynton Beach whom she was married to for 60 years. She will be sadly missed by sons Scott (Miriam), of Deland, Florida; James (Nora), of Sacramento, California; and Morris (Courtney) Newman, of Plantation, Florida. Shirley will be sadly missed by grandchildren Matthew, (Kroopa Desai), Rachel, Joshua (Jessica), Desiree, Darian, Gavin, Teagan and great grandchildren Jaidyn, Julianne and Joshua Jr.
Shirley was born on May 1, 1938 in Lawrence, Massachusetts to Morris and Francis Kettleman. She graduated from Miami Senior High in 1956 and was a member of Honoria. She then attended the University of Miami where she received her Bachelor of Science degree, and later her Master’s degree in Exceptional Student Education. Throughout all of her schooling, Shirley maintained the highest honors, and graduated Summa Cum Laude. Shirley Kettleman and Robert Newman married in 1958 in Miami Beach. After graduating college, Shirley taught for more than 28 years in Miami-Dade County. She was very involved in Future Homemakers of America and attended many competitions with her students. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, cooking and collecting and selling depression era glass. In retirement, she was an avid member of the South Florida Depression Glass Club.
A funeral is scheduled for 2:00 pm on Friday, November 10, 2017 at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapel, 5900 SW 77th Avenue, Miami, Florida. Rabbi Jonathan Tabachnikoff will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Shirley Newman’s life.
