Sergio Pino Garcia

SEPTEMBER 9, 1956 – JULY 16, 2024

Sergio Pino was born in Cuba on September 9, 1956. He arrived in the United States at the age of 12 accompanied by his parents, Eugenio Pino and Helia Garcia-Pino, and his younger brother, Carlos Pino. He began his work life at the tender age of 12 cleaning rugs and working at a plumbing supply shop. He graduated from Miami-Dade County Public High School and shortly thereafter opened his first business in the plumbing industry and called it Century Plumbing. In 1995, he founded Century Homebuilders Group which grew to become the largest Hispanic-owned home builder in the nation. Almost 30 years later, Century is responsible for building over 20,000 homes throughout Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.

Sergio was an active community member serving in various leadership roles. Between 1989-1992, he was President of the Latin Builders Association of South Florida and held positions in Public Health Trust, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Mercy Foundation, and Florida International University Board of Trustees. In 2000, Governor Jeb Bush appointed him to serve on the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Commission. He was also a Founding Member and Director of Ready State Bank and a Founding Member and Vice-chairman of US Century Bank. In Sergio’s past three decades, he was ranked amongst the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Top 100 Hispanic Companies, Builders Top 100, Hispanic Business Top 100, and as The South Florida Business Journal’s Largest Hispanic Owned Business. In addition, Century Homebuilders received numerous Awards for Excellence in the Homebuilding Industry, and an honorary South Florida Entrepreneur of the Year award from Florida International University.

His philanthropy touched many lives, notably through his support of La Liga Contra El Cancer and American Cancer Society/Making Strides Against Breast Cancer organizations. Additionally, he made a significant contribution to Florida International University, funding the E. Pino and Family Entrepreneurship Building named after his father and family (The Eugenio Pino & Family Global Entrepreneurship Center). In 2023, he donated a park to the City of Doral that will be named in honor of his mother, Helia Garcia-Pino.

Sergio was full of life and lived every day to the fullest. In his later years, he found joy on his boat, Century Star, surrounded by the people he loved. He passed away on July 16, 2024, at the age of 67.

He is survived by his four children, Jacqueline Pino Wechsler, Sergio Alexander Pino, Carolina Neuman and Alessandra Pino, his two grandchildren, his father, Eugenio Pino, his brother, Carlos Pino, sister-in-law, Norma Pino and their three children, Carlos Daniel Pino, Michael Pino and Kristina Pino.

Sergio Pino nació en Cuba el 9 de septiembre de 1956. Llegó a Estados Unidos a la edad de 12 años acompañado por sus padres, Eugenio Pino y Helia García-Pino, y su hermano menor, Carlos Pino. Comenzó su vida laboral a la tierna edad de 12 años limpiando alfombras y trabajando en una tienda de suministros de fontanería. Se graduó de la escuela secundaria pública del condado de Miami-Dade y poco después abrió su primer negocio en la industria de la fontanería al que llamó Century Plumbing. En 1995, fundó Century Homebuilders Group, que llegó a ser el mayor constructor de viviendas de propiedad hispana en la nación. Casi 30 años después, Century es responsable de la construcción de más de 20,000 hogares en todo el condado de Miami-Dade y Broward.

Sergio fue un miembro activo de la comunidad, desempeñándose en varios roles de liderazgo. Entre 1989 y 1992, fue presidente de la Latin Builders Association of South Florida y ocupó cargos en Public Health Trust, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Mercy Foundation y la Junta de Fideicomisarios de la Florida International University. Sergio estaba lleno de vida y vivió cada día al máximo. En sus últimos años, encontró alegría en su barco, Century Star, rodeado de las personas que amaba. Falleció el 16 de julio de 2024, a la edad de 67 años.

Le sobreviven sus cuatro hijos, Jacqueline Pino-Wechsler, Sergio Alexander Pino, Carolina Neuman y Alessandra Pino, sus dos nietos, su padre, Eugenio Pino, su hermano, Carlos Pino, su cuñada, Norma Pino, y sus tres hijos, Carlos Daniel Pino, Michael Pino y Kristina Pino.
