Roy was born on November 6, 1938 in Canton, Ohio, the son of Robert Rohe and Dolores Volzer. He passed away May 4, 2022, after a long illness, surrounded by his loving wife of 36 years, Lilleen "Dee" Warren Rohe, children Loretta Tatman Gelabert, Bruce Tatman, grandson Joshua Blomeley and son-in-law Manny Gelabert.
Roy's family moved to Coral Gables when he was six years old. In high school and college he was a champion on several swimming teams, traveling nationwide and to Cuba for various competitions, winning many medals.
During his teen years, Roy wrestled alligators and captured snakes in the Everglades, which he and friends sold to Bill Haas of the Miami Serpentarium. His last snake-hunting trip and the first time in many years for him and his best friend Ronnie Wagner's uncle, Senator Richard Black, was about three years ago.
Roy also worked as lifeguard at the Venetian Pool until he joined the Army National Guard and was deployed to Vietnam, but the war ended before his unit could go.
Roy and Ronnie Wagner, with Lee Moore, formed the World Reptile company which was to travel to South America for capturing reptiles to sell in the States. This venture was abruptly aborted due to Ronnie's untimely death in a plane crash in the jungles of Peru. Luckily, Roy, who was supposed to be on that trip was on duty with the National Guard.
Roy subsequently was employed by Western Electric Telephone Co., then with Southern Bell, as an electronic technician traveling throughout the Florida Keys, Florida, and southern states. He retired after many years to dedicate his acclaimed healing gifts through the Florida Licensed Massage Therapy profession.
During these early years while working, Roy hosted the Good News, a recorded phone message with encouraging words and Bible quotes.
Roy and Dee traveled throught eastern France and southern California with the Sommelier Guild, visiting many vineyards. Also An Elk Club member for more than thirty years, Roy was honored with the "Elk of the Year" award a few years ago. At the Elk dances and at the Sommelier Guild wine tasting parties, Roy could be seen dancing "wild and crazy" sometimes generating applause.
Roy, beloved by so many, with his own caring smile, leaves behind only one of five brothers, Lee Rohe of Cudjoe Key FL, their older brother Robert having passed away less than two weeks after Roy's passing.
