Raquel Caiñas Gomez

Mamana, Abuela, Raquel nació en Pinar Del Rio, Cuba el 24 de Enero del 1920.

Sus padres el Dr. Manuel Caiñas Ponzoa, Juez de la Corte Suprema de Cuba e Isabel Verde Porta. De niña, vivió en Pinar Del Rio, Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo. Graduada de la Escuela Normal de Maestros.

Se comprometió con el Ingeniero Gustavo Gómez Hernández, de La Habana, que estudiaba Ingeniería Eléctrica en La Universidad de La Habana.

Cuando se casaron el 23 de diciembre del 1942, se fueron a vivir a Nicaro, en la costa norte de la provincia de Oriente. Gustavito, el primogénito, nació en 1943. Después vivieron en Matanzas, donde nació Manolo.

Vivió en La Habana hasta salir de Cuba en 1961.

Vivió en Sylacauga, Alabama por muchos años donde vivió con sus hijos y sus sobrinos Richard, Eduardo, Chispa y Marisa. Tiempos inolvidables para todos.

Cuando todos sus hijos y sobrinos se fueron a la universidad, cursó la Maestría de Español en Samford University en Birmingham, Alabama. Después fue maestra de Español en Leeds High School en Birmingham por 18 años.

Se retiraron a Miami en 1984, donde vivieron por 30 anos en una casa que ella adoraba. En Marzo del 2012, murió Papin y ella vivió con Nelsy hasta Julio 10 del 2016.

En su casa tuvieron maravillosas fiestas, sobre todo con la familia, Mamana fue muy buena cocinera, tejía genial, muy buena nadadora y sobretodo fiestera. Era una mujer dulce y generosa. Siempre tenia una sonrisa y recibía a todos con amabilidad y cariño. Le gustaba mucho su casa. Le gustaba vestir elegante. Le decíamos Santa Raquel por lo buena que fue con Papin.

El 6 de Marco del 1972 trajo la primera nieta querida de Mamana, Ana Lourdes Gomez Volek. Alina Raquel Gomez Correa nació el 13 de Mayo de 1983, justo a tiempo para disfrutar sus primeras Navidades con Ana en Birmingham, poco ante del retiro de Mamana y Papin a Miami. El 21 Julio del 1987 se llenó el trio de nietas con Natalia Pilar Gomez Correa. El trio se repitió con tres preciosos bisnietos- Preston Volek 28 de Julio del 2007, Reese Volek, el 10 de Octubre 2009 y el bebe Gannon el 28 de Septiembre del 2013. Poco alegraba más a Mamana que ver a sus nietos y bisnietos disfrutar la piscina.

Le gustaba el cine y la televisión, sobre todo los programas de noticias, movie-stars, etc. pero nada comparado a las realezas del mundo. Cuando la familia real Inglesa se casaron, ella y Ana lo vieron por la tele, lo que se repitió cuando Alina y Mamana vieron el matrimonio de William. ella disfrutaba conversar sobre los artistas, celebribades y películas, y vivió para votar por la primera mujer como presidente, Hillary!

En un gesto entrañable su hijo Manolo y Sylvia (¡también de Pinar del Rio, algo que a Mamana le encanto!) se casaron en el 1979 en la misma fecha en diciembre que Mamana y Papin, y en honor de ellos.

Mamana estará en nuestros corazones y nuestros recuerdos por todas nuestras vidas.

Mamana....Abuela....Raquel, was born in Pinar del Río, Cuba, on January 24, 1920.

Her parents, Dr. Manuel Caiñas Ponzoa, judge of the Cuban Supreme Court and Isabel Verde Porta.

As a girl and young woman she lived in Pinar Del Río, Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo and La Habana. She was a graduate of the Normal School of Teachers.

She was engaged to Gustavo Gómez Hernández, of La Habana, who was an Electrical Engineer student at the University of Habana. When they married on December 23, 1942 they went to live in Nicaro, Oriente on the eastern north coast of Cuba.

Gustavito, the first-born, came in August of 1943, then they went to live in Matanzas, where Manolo was born in January 1948.

They lived in La Habana until they left Cuba in 1961. Lived in Sylacauga, Alabama for several years where she lived with her sons and nieces/nephews Richard, Eduardo, Marisa and Chispa. These were unforgettable times for all of us.

When all 6 kids went to the University, she obtained a Master's Degree in Spanish from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. She taught Spanish for 20 years at Leeds High School in Birmingham.

They retired in Miami in 1984, where they lived in a house that she adored. Her husband Gustavo passed away in March 2012. She lived with Nelsy Castillo, who loved and cared for her until July 10, 2016, when she left us.

In her house in Miami she had marvelous parties, specially with all the family. She was a great cook, hostess, genial knitter, very good swimmer and loved dancing and parties. Raquel was a very elegant lady, sweet and generous. She always had a smile and received everyone with warmth and friendliness. She loved her house and pool. We called her Saint Raquel, for she was so good to her husband.

In March 6, 1972 came the very first dear granddaughter, Ana Lourdes Gómez Volek. Alina Raquel Gómez Correa was born on May 13, 1983, just in time to enjoy a Birmingham Christmas with Ana, just before Raquel and Gustavo retired in Miami.w

On July 21, 1987 Natalia Pilar Gómez Correa rounded-up the trio.

The trio repeated itself with her 3 beautiful great-grandsons: Preston Dante on July 28, 2007; Reese Owen on October 10, 2009 and Gannon Alexander, the baby, on September 28, 2013. There was nothing that made Raquel happier, but see her grand-daughters and great grand-sons enjoy her pool.

She liked movies and tv, specially the news, movie-stars, etc, but nothing compared to watching and reading about the royalty of the world. When the English royal family had a wedding, Ana and her stayed up to watch it. Then, when, William and Kate got married, Alina and Raquel stayed up.

Raquel loved to talk about artists, fashion, celebrities and movies, she was even getting ready to vote for the first US woman president, Hillary!

As an endearing gesture -which she loved - her son Manolo, married Sylvia Correa ( also from Pinar Del Río) on the same day as her wedding anniversary, December 23, 1979.

Mamana will be in our hearts and memories for all of our lives.
