Norma Calderín Fernández de Ruiz-Castañeda was born in Havana, Cuba on April 22, 1930 and passed in Miami, Florida on August 12, 2021 after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for many years. She completed her elementary and secondary studies at the Guardian Angel School under the tutelage of the Servant of God Mariana Lola Alvarez. After graduating in the field of education, she returned to teach at her dear School. She was later a founding teacher at the Charity Parochial School under the supervision of Monsignor Eduardo Boza Masvidal, who would be appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Havana and who is in the process of beatification. She was an active member of the Cuban Catholic Youth and a close collaborator of its Spiritual Director, Brother Victorino of La Salle, elevated to the rank of Venerable by Pope Francis. Norma frequently expressed how fortunate she was of having been a disciple of three great Cubans who died with scent of holiness.
She married Norman Ruiz-Castañeda López, a union that produced four children, 14 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. The Cuban Revolution sent the family to exile, where Norma sustained it by first selling crackers from home to home, then domestic items, and finally jewelry. Returning to her professional roots, she decided to revalidate her teaching credentials at the University of Miami and obtain a master’s degree at Nova Southeastern University. For many years she worked as a teacher at M.A. Milam Elementary School and managed a satellite of Hialeah-Miami Lakes Adult Education Center. After retiring, she became an international tour guide, bringing groups of travelers to more than 65 countries.
Since her days in Cuba, Norma was characterized by her altruism and charities that went from the education of poor children to the habilitation of university residences for the youth from the interior of the Island who came to Havana to study. In Miami she educated many immigrant children and adults, taught English to domestic workers, discreetly paid for the college education of some young girls, knitted baby blankets for Cuba, and collected medicine containers all around town to be used by Cuban parishes. Her greatest pride was the foundation of the Guardian Angel Preschool at the St. Joachim Parish under the direction of Father Jesús Arias, the collaboration of the alumni of the homonymous school in Cuba, and the intersession of Mariana Lola Alvarez, Servant of God.
Her family and friends know with certainty that Norma has been rewarded with Eternal Life in the presence of God for her earthly life full of faith, hope, and love. Just a few days after her departure, some people have already been blessed with her manifestations.
