With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Nora Bulnes, a beloved woman who dedicated her life to uplifting her community and who leaves a lasting legacy of compassion, strength, and resilience. Nora was not only a pioneering publisher and community leader but also a beacon of hope for countless individuals whose lives she touched through her relentless advocacy and philanthropy. Nora was born in Manzanillo, Cuba, where she first found her passion as a teacher and married the love of her life, Evaristo Bulnes. In 1960, with her two-month-old daughter in her arms, she was forced to leave behind her homeland amidst political turmoil. She arrived in Miami with little more than determination and an unwavering faith in the future. Overcoming language barriers, cultural adjustments, and financial hardships, Nora transformed these challenges into strength and began building a life dedicated to service. Through sheer perseverance and grace, she rose as a successful entrepreneur, creating a space for Hispanic voices and stories. In 1984, guided by her deep commitment to the Hispanic community, she founded Selecta Magazine—a publication born of her desire to honor Hispanic heritage and bring communities together. What began as a dream grew into one of the most respected upscale Hispanic magazines in the United States, celebrating the achievements and beauty of Hispanic culture. Through Selecta, she brought people together, inspiring generations of readers and bridging cultures. Later, through her Hope & Dreams Foundation, founded in 2001, she poured her heart into supporting those in need, and her love for her community became her life’s calling. Nora’s tireless work earned her numerous accolades that spoke to her character and contributions. She was honored with awards that acknowledged her compassion, leadership, and dedication to humanitarian causes. From the Lifetime Achievement Award by Hispanic Designers, Inc. to Cartier’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998, Nora’s efforts also won her the Red Cross Spectrum Award for Women in 2000 and recognition by organizations such as the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and the Latin Chamber of Commerce. She was awarded the keys to the cities of Coral Gables, Bal Harbour, Miami, and Miami-Dade County—a tribute to the depth of her impact and the breadth of her influence. Though her achievements were numerous, Nora was most proud of her family. She is survived by her cherished children, Avelina Bulnes Rodriguez and Michael Bulnes, and her beloved grandchildren: Fernando Rodriguez Jr., Andria Rodriguez, Michelle Bulnes Halaszynski, Joshua Rodriguez, and Michael Bulnes II. She was the heart and soul of her family and our community. Her love and dedication remain woven into the fabric of Miami and the lives she touched around the world. Nora’s presence will be missed profoundly, but her legacy lives on through the people she inspired, the causes she championed, and the enduring love she brought to everything she did. Her spirit will continue to shine in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her, a testament to a life beautifully and purposefully lived.
A visitation for Nora Bulnes will be held on Monday, November 18, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM at Caballero Rivero Westchester, 8200 Bird Road, Miami. A committal service will follow at 2:00 PM at Miami Memorial Park Cemetery, 6200 SW 77th Ave, Miami. Family and friends are welcome to honor her legacy
