Manuel was born August 4th, 1918 to parents Felipe and Maria Manuela (Alcantara) Cartaya in Placetas, Las Villas, Cuba. He graduated from La Escuela Provincial de Agricultura Juan Bautista Jimenez in Santa Clara, Cuba in 1942, and immigrated to New Jersey in 1955. Manuel married Gliceria (Hernandez) Cartaya in 1956, and they raised two sons, Henry Philip and Charles Manuel. Manuel was a devoted family man and devout Catholic.
Manuel was loved by all that met him. Manuel enjoyed telling stories of growing up on “la finca” in Cuba, with his parents and siblings to anyone that would listen. Manuel read the bible daily, completed Suduko puzzles, and wrote poetry to his beloved wife until his eyesight began to fail. Manuel loved to keep active by walking and exercising until the final months. He loved being surrounded by friends and family. Manuel kept toys at home for when the grandchildren, and later great-grandchildren would visit, and loved to play with them.
Manuel was preceded in death by his father, Felipe, and mother, Maria Manuela, and his siblings; Ibrahim, Laurentino, Elisa, Felipe, Salvador, Candida, Rosa, and Berardo. Manuel is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Gliceria, sons Henry Philip and Charles Manuel, sister Arminda, granddaughters; Grace Victoria, Lisa Marie, and Joann Josephine, and six great-grandchildren.
