Lucia Sabi de Salas went home to our Lord on Sunday, June 3rd, the feast of Corpus Cristi. She spent her life devoted to Christ and her family. Although she was an only child, she bravely took on the adventure of having seven children with her dear Frank. She is survived by her husband Frank, her 7 children, and their spouses : Frank and Joan Salas, Raul and Aurora Salas, Albert Salas, Jimmy Salas, Joe Salas, Lucy and Carlos Moas and Mary Salas as well as her 15 grand children:
Albert, Mario, Kyle, Jessica, Andres, David, Victor, Javier, Rafael, Juan Antonio, Jorge,Luis Alberto, Anthony, Isabel, and Lucia
and her 5 great grandchildren: Brandon, Ella, Oliver, Otto, and Índigo.
Lucia completed her high school and commerce studies at the Merici Academy in Havana, and after graduation, taught there among the Ursuline sisters, who loved Lucia like a daughter.
The Salas family was uprooted from Cuba in 1960 and with their four children, Frank and Lucia moved to New Jersey, where they welcomed three more children to the family.
The frozen winters didn't deter Lucia from enjoying life. She ice skated on frozen ponds in Nutley and in an open air ice skating rink in Montclair. The family enjoyed trips to nearby lakes, the shore, and many happy times at Thousand Islands. In addition to raising her children, Lucia found the time to earn her AA in Interior Design from the New York School of Interior Design.
In 1975, the family moved to Miami, where Lucia enjoyed the beach, boating, and gardening. She worked with the United Sates Immigration Service and later, as an administrative assistant at the University of Miami. After retirement from the university, she volunteered with the Missionaries of Charity of Overtown, assisting the sisters in their soup kitchen.
Mamita adopted the United States as her home, and was always grateful to this country for having embraced her and having given her family the opportunity to grow, learn, and work in peace and freedom.
She will be remembered for her inexhaustible energy, her fearlessness, her warm and generous heart, her unshakeable faith, and her love of family!
We will miss you, Mamita, and look forward to seeing you once again.
The funeral mass will be held at the Church of the Epiphany on Thursday, June 7th, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.
