In loving memory of Kimberly Ann Kelly, who passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, surrounded by the warmth and love of her two daughters. Born on December 19, 1963, in Jupiter, Florida, Kim's remarkable journey touched the lives of many.
Kim embarked on an exceptional academic and athletic journey, graduating from Jupiter High School in 1981 and securing a basketball scholarship to Florida International University in Miami, FL. A four-year starter for the Panthers, she emerged not only with a deep passion for the game but also with a bachelor's and master's degree in Education, marking the beginning of a fulfilling career.
Before her career in Education, Kim pursued her love for basketball at a professional level, playing overseas in England before the establishment of the WNBA. Her four seasons abroad were filled with adventure, forging lifelong friendships and cherished memories across Europe.
For three decades, Kim served as a teacher and coach within the Miami-Dade Public School system, concluding her career in December 2022. Alongside her teaching endeavors, she passionately contributed to the sports community, officiating basketball and volleyball at high school and college levels. Her affiliation with various official volleyball organizations spoke to her commitment and expertise.
As part of the Miami Heat family for 25 years, Kim worked on the stats crew, shot clock, and media relations. She enjoyed being associated with that organization and was such a fan of the team.
Kim's strength, infectious smile, and heart of gold defined her character. Fiercely independent, she fearlessly pursued her dreams, creating a life filled with meaningful connections and experiences. Her proudest role was that of mother to daughters Lauren and Caitlin, with whom she shared countless adventures, including cherished visits to Disney World and a memorable summer trip to Washington DC, New York City, and Niagara Falls in 2019.
In marriage, Kim shared 14 years with her former husband, Rick (they met on a basketball court!). They had known each other long before marriage and remained close friends throughout the years to the end.
For the past five years, Kim had found companionship in Wade, her beloved Golden Doodle, who will be well cared for by her daughters.
Through her roles in teaching, coaching, officiating, and contributing to the Miami Heat, Kim cultivated a diverse and extensive network of friends who will feel the void left by her passing. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those fortunate enough to know and love her.
She is survived by her two daughters, Lauren and Caitlin; former husband, Rick; her sister, Cindy (Rich) Sciarrino; one of her closest friends cousin Tony Pellegrini; her brother, Robert Pellegrini; and her mother, Betty Pellegrini. She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph.
A visitation for Kimberly will be held Thursday, February 15, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 11:59 PM at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn South, 11655 SW 117 Ave, Miami, FL 33186.
