My Dear Friend Basil,

Jennifer and I are so terribly distraught to have just learned of the recent passing of our dear friend, and your beloved bride of so many years … Jean.    Our daughters Indira and Sabrina join us in extending heartfelt condolences to you, Kwame, Diallo, Sandra, Carol, Marchelle, Elka, Keisha, and the rest of the Bryan extended family.

Words simply cannot express our sorrows at hearing this unexpected news of the passing of Indira’s (our firstborn) godmother. Although our two families have not been together for several years, 1974 in Washington DC will always be remembered for the fond memories which followed our first meeting at your home in Maryland. 

Jean, especially, will always be remembered for her very compelling demeanor as a very pleasant, humorous, and fun-loving person who so much loved her family.  Jennifer and I are grateful, humbled, and, so fortunate to have known Jean and, indeed, the entire Bryan family unit.

     Jean was a "sister" to me.  When she came to work as a fellow Counselor in  the Educational Advisory Center of the College of Liberal Arts, at Howard University we were immediately compatible.  Our friendship soon outgrew our professional relationship.  My late husband, "the Colonel,"  loved her cooking. So often when she came to work, she would hand me a little package and say "This is for John."  Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I had the privilege of being named after her “Jean Marie “ - it has been many years since we last spoke but it’s just unbelievable that the very week she passed on she came to mind along with her sisters and I wondered if she had made the move from Maryland to Florida. Then my cousin came across the announcement on Facebook. 
Our love to her husband and family also Sister San and Sister Carol.

So glad I did, we spoke on a few occasions, wonderful conversations and got caught up with  life,  she was enjoying grand-parenthood, despite distances.  So happy she had that joy.

Our heart felt condolences to Basil, Kwame, Diallo, Sandra, Carol and their families for the untimely passing of a truly wonderful wife, mother, sister, friend and servant of Our Almighty God. I have had the good fortune to have enjoyed Jean's warmth, affection, kindness, guidance and support for the past fifty six years.  Sonia, my wife, and I consider Jean and Basil not only close neighbors (living only three miles apart) but Family. We did a lot together and shared many happy memories. These memories we will treasure until we are called home.

You and your sisters were a few of the students l knew when l first went to Camperdown.You have always been welcoming to me and although we did not share any classes  l could always depend on you for guidance.As a head girl you were always there to offer assistance .l can remember the needlework teacher using 
a  garment that you made as an example for us to follow.As long as l live l cannot forget you and Hermine Taylor leaving the school grounds to let my Aunt know that although my name was left out of the Gleaner as one of the students that was successful in the Sr.Cambridge Exam ,it was an error .l was successful.l happened to be with my Aunt that day (being ashamed to attend school ) I remembered how happy l was to get the good news.Thanks again ladies for realizing that you could "add some joy" to my day. It is with utmost sadness that I grieve with the Bryan family for the devastating loss of Jean.

I had worked with Dr. Basil Bryan for many years in the Jamaican Embassy in Washington, D.C. and throughout those years had gotten to know the family quite well.

My lasting memory of Jean and I believe the last time that I saw her was when she traveled to Tokyo Japan in 1997 and stayed with me at my apartment during the visit (at the time I was working for the Jamaican Embassy in Tokyo, Japan).  This tour of duty was made possible by Dr. Bryan.  

After returning to the United States, we were in communication up until a couple of years ago and then I lost touch with him and Jean.

Jean was such a beautiful soul who was very infectious with her strong personality, independence, kindness and tremendous love for her family and friends.

Gone but not forgotten and even though we had not communicated for a long time ..... I will certainly miss you.   


As head girl at CHS Jean was well liked and respected. I remember her encouraging me to go out for track and field even though she knew I was never going to be good. Her encouragement was good enough for me.

I am deeply saddened by Jean’s passing. She was my walking partner for many, many years and even though she moved to Florida ending our early morning routine, we continued to keep in touch, compare notes and encourage each other in our fitness journey.  She even wanted me to move to Florida so we could continue our shenanigans after retirement. I can never forget Jean, whenever I walk or go by our favorite track/walking route I think of her with the fondest memories. Her discipline with our walks was amazing! Good weather or not, even in the snow we made it out. We motivated each other and I will always be grateful to her for that partnership. Walk good Jean! Love always! 🙏🏽❤️

We met Jean in 1966 through a mutual friend Mickey.  Over the years we developed a great friendship. She Loved me with all of my weaknesses and faults.  We will miss you our dear friend and you will always remain in our hearts. Sleep well our friend until we will meet again.  Remember our promise, we have a date on that beautiful shore near the tree of life.   We are looking forward to that day when we will be together again. Although we live many miles away, across the pond, there isn't a day that goes by that we don’t think about the Wiley's and the Bryan's as our extended families.

We are deeply saddened to hear the news of Jean affectionately our Auntie Jean.  We find some comfort in the memories we have of time spent with her including her visit to us at our home in the UK.

A couple of memories that stands out, amongst many for both of us, was during the football or soccer World Cup 2010 when England were playing, Darren hung up the England flag at the top of the stairs which Auntie Jean loved. 
There is also never a doubt of her Jamaican heritage and pride, we also remember when Auntie Jean wore her bright yellow Jamaican colours jacket as she sprinted up the hills of Dover castle and the famous white cliffs. She always looked beautiful, even more beautiful in yellow. 

We feel honoured to have known our Auntie Jean who welcomed us into her family and her heart and will forever remember her as warm, adventurous, friendly, generous, welcoming, energetic and proud. We are so privileged to have known her. We will miss her always.
