Dr. Barrios was born in Havana, Cuba on December 24, 1937 to Bolivar and Carmela Barrios.
He was raised in Havana, Cuba where he attended Belen Jesuit School and then medical school at the University of Havana. He fled to the United States in 1961 after Fidel Castro seized control of Cuba. After a short stay in the United States, he completed his medical education in Madrid and Salamanca, Spain. He married Maria Elena Garcia de la Vega on May 30, 1964, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in the Roads area of Miami. He continued his medical studies in Florida at St. Mary’s Hospital in West Palm Beach, FL, Broward General Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL. From 1969-1971, he served as a surgeon with the rank of Major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Vietnam.
Upon his return to the U.S., Dr. Barrios opened his medical practice in Coral Gables, FL and another practice in the Kendall area of Miami. He served on the Board of Directors for Kendall Regional Medical Center, Chief, Division of Orthopedic Surgery for Mercy Hospital and Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at Kendall Regional Medical Center. In 2011, he served as Chief of Orthopedic Service at Leon Medical Centers. In 2017, he closed his medical practice and began working for Leon Medical Clinics full time providing medical care and consultations to patients. For the last 18 months he was seeing patients via telemedicine until one week before he passed. Dr. Barrios was known to his colleagues, residents, nurses, and patients as a compassionate and caring physician. Many will remember him for his love of history, wine, traveling, and cooking.
Survivors include his sons Ivan Manuel Barrios and Alexander Barrios, his daughter Maria Elena Barrios-Mendez; four grandchildren: Alexia Barrios, Nicholas Barrios, Luca Mendez, and Gabriel Barrios; two sons-in-law: Mark Virgin and Raul Mendez; and one daughter-in-law: Alessandra Barrios.
Visitation and mass will be on Tuesday, September 28th 9:00 am – 12:00 noon at Caballero Rivero Westchester located 8200 Bird Road, Miami, FL 33155. The Funeral Mass will be held from 12:30 pm – 1:15 pm at St. Raymond Catholic Church, 3475 SW 17th St, Miami, FL 33145.
