Ira David Cohen, 83, from Miami Beach, Florida passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, February 11, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 11, 1940 in Brooklyn, New York to Danny David and Sophie Cohen. Ira grew up in Miami Beach and graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School class of 1958. He went on to the University of Miami, where he was president of the fraternity, Phi Ep. Ira later attended law school, but chose to follow in his father’s foot steps in real estate development and investments. He was involved in the early stages of developing and expanding Blockbuster video stores nationwide. Ira lived a full and enriching life and was a true legend of Miami Beach. He lit up a room with his contagious smile and charisma. He was voted most eligible bachelor by Miami Magazine in 1972 as he appeared on the cover. He had a passion for the Dolphins and the Canes. He loved making deals, had a myriad of friends, and touched numerous lives.
He is survived by his wife, Sofia Cohen, sister, Lilyan (Ned Seder) Cuttler, brother, Gary (Barbara) Cohen, by son, Danny Cohen, and daughters, Meredith (Jay) Shapiro, Taylor Cohen and Kelli Cohen. He leaves behind 4 grandchildren: David, Samantha, and Jared Shapiro and Natalia Cohen.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 13 at 1:00 at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapels at Mount Nebo (Kendall). 5900 SW 77th Ave., Miami, FL 33143
Interment will follow at Mt Nebo Miami Memorial Gardens at 5500 NW 3rd Street, Miami, Fl 33126
Donations can be made in his memory to the University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Center.
