FRED RICHARD OBER
Fred was born in Boston May 12, 1936, and so loved his hometown. He cherished his Red Sox, and was loyal to them until his dying day. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on April 9, 2025.
When he was 12, Fred moved to Coral Gables with his mother, Jeanette and stepfather, Charlie (who owned Charlie’s Auto Parts). He attended Coral Gables High and was a member of its first graduating class in 1953. He continued to the University of Miami for his undergraduate education, and then to UM’s Law School for his law degree. He was an avid Canes supporter and had the most coveted seats in the Orange Bowl for UM home games – 4 seats directly on the 50-yard line above the tunnel. Some of you enjoyed attending games in his seats, after visiting one of Don Kubit’s legendary tailgate parties!
The portion of his life that brought him the most pride was Fred’s service in the Air Force as a JAG Captain. He served during an interesting period of time and loved sharing tales of his behind-the-scenes involvement in the Cuban Missile Crisis and the time surrounding the Kennedy assassination.
He was a law clerk at the Third District Court of Appeals, after which he joined the Fowler White law firm in the casualty litigation department. After retiring from the practice of law, he became a mediator with Florida Mediation Group.
Fred is survived by his loving wife and ever-loyal caregiver, Tammy McIntyre; daughter, Heidi Ober; stepchildren, Dr. Melissa Abdo (daughter, Alira) and Michael Abdo (Evelyn and children, Mikey, Arianna and Bella).
In lieu of services, Fred asks that people remember him by doing something good for someone who needs it – call, text or visit a shut-in; give some relief to a caregiver; volunteer where help is needed. Find a way to bring some kindness into this world. Make time for and think of others. The time to show you care is while someone is alive…
