Cornelius Smith was the first child born to Henry and Betty Smith in Quincy, FL on August 5, 1930. He received his education in the public school system of Gadsen County. After completing his education, he went on to work for the City of Quincy. Cornelius always had a love for the Lord and was reared in a Christian home. At a young age Cornelius met Christine while they were working together, and from the initial meeting they became inseparable.
On August 13, 1949 he married his best friend and the love of his life to whom he was a devoted and loving husband for 71 years. To this union seven children were born, and three proceeded him in death: James, Cornelious Jr. and Cynthia. In 1960, Cornelius and Christine wanted better opportunities for their family and decided to relocate to Miami, Florida.
After settling in Miami, FL they joined Martin Memorial A.M.E. church where they served for 60 years. During his tenure at Martin Memorial, he was a dedicated member and served as a class leader, member of the male chorus and on the Trustee Board. In 2020, he joined C.O.R.E Temple Ministries under the leadership of Bishop Christopher Chin and has been a faithful member.
Cornelius worked for the City of Coral Gables for over twenty years and was a valued and dedicated employee. He was involved in many activities that brought him so much joy and he looked forward to these activities. His mornings began at McDonald’s and he would transition to the Richmond Heights Seniors Program where he played dominos and was named the domino king. Cornelius also was a member of the Masonic Offspring Lodge #252.
Cornelius was a loving husband, wonderful father, brother, and grandfather. Cornelius’ greatest joy and happiest times were times that he spent with his family to which he loved unconditionally.
On Friday, April 2, 2021, Cornelius received the call, answered and departed to be in the arms of the Lord.
Cornelius leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Christine Smith. Two daughters Ernestine Davis (Henry) and Theresa Peele (Kenneth Jr.), two sons Marvin Smith (Lashawn) and Cary Smith (Tangelia). Nine grandchildren: Angela Chin (Christopher Sr.), Erica Smith, Waltnika Perry, Kenneth Peele III (Monique), Adriane Ray (Dominick), Christopher Oliver, Chelsea Peele Young-Sang (Dwight), Cary Smith II and Krystal Smith. Eight great-grandchildren: Christopher II, Christan, De’Jah, Cameron, Kenneth IV, Kaleb, Cornelious, and Donovan. One great great-grandchild, Christopher III. Two sisters: Lou Oliver and Barbara Stokes. Three sisters in laws: Idella Armstead, Flossie Thomas and Alice Dudley (Jaron), and a host of other nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
