It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Mills Kushner, who left us on April 8, 2024, to join her beloved husband Frederick and daughter Shari. Born on January 1, 1935, in Lima, Ohio, Barbara was celebrated as the first baby of the year in her community. She was the cherished daughter of Herman and Sally Mills and a loving sister to Gerald.
Barbara's life was marked by a serendipitous romance when, at 19, she met Frederick Kushner. Though initially dating someone else, Barbara was captivated by Frederick's charm, leading her to a fateful decision that culminated in their marriage on September 19, 1954. Their union was a testament to enduring love, lasting until Frederick's passing in 2012.
Throughout their 58 years together, Barbara and Frederick traveled the world, exploring new cultures and creating lifelong memories. They started their family soon after marrying, welcoming their children Ellen Sue, Bruce Alan, Shari Lynn, and Amy Jo. Their home was always bustling with the joyful noise of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who were Barbara's greatest joy.
Barbara dedicated many years to teaching before transitioning to a career as a travel agent, further feeding her passion for exploration. After Fred’s death in 2012, she moved to Boca Raton, where she continued to thrive, making friends and staying active in her community through various organizations, including Hadassah and other Jewish women's groups.
Even in her later years, as she battled lung cancer, Barbara's spirit remained unbroken. She was determined to see her grandchildren grow, a testament to her strength and love. Barbara was known for her vibrant red hair, perfectly matched glue-on fingernails, and her fondness for sweets. Her life was a melody underscored by her favorite Johnny Cash ringtone.
Barbara spent her days with friends and loved playing mah-jongg, canasta, and rummy cube, and she cherished her nightly friendships with Jake, Dana, and Anderson on CNN, or going to shows with friends.
As we remember Barbara, we reflect on a life well-lived—a beacon of love, warmth, and resilience for her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
She is survived by three of her children, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren and her brother.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society (Cancer.org) in Barbara's memory. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to all those who cared for Barbara during her final days and contributed to making her life so remarkable.
