Thomas Eugene “Tom” Clyburn, age 70 years, died at River Region Hospice on Sunday, January 16, 2010. Son of Violet B. Clyburn of Cocoa Beach, FL and the late Clarence E. Clyburn. Brother of Ronald B. Clyburn (Debbie) of Cocoa, FL and the late Barbara Clyburn. Uncle of Sean and Shane Clyburn and also survived by 3 great nieces and a great nephew. Devoted friend of Sonny Gee of Metairie, LA and life partner of the late Peter Slay. Also remembered by his faithful pals, “Toby” and “Rosie”.
Mr. Clyburn was a native of Rock Hill, SC and lived over 45 years in New Orleans. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, a graduate of the University of Florida and was employed with Associated Office Systems for over 30 years. He was a longtime member and former board member of Unity Temple of New Orleans, the Steamboat Club, a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and best known as ones of the city’s most accomplished pianists. He will be remembered for hosting a Sunday afternoon sing-a-long with friends and patrons of Good Friends Bar in the French Quarter for over 15 years.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Memorial Services on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 11:00 AM from Unity Temple, 3722 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA with Dr. Ruth M. Elmer officiating, followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of the usual remembrances, memorials are suggested to Unity Temple or your favorite charity.
