Sol Ortiz Walker passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 4th, 2023 at the age of 87 after a brave battle with cancer. She was a valiant fighter until the very end. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all that met her. Sol was born on October 2, 1935, in Corozal, Puerto Rico and moved to New Orleans as a teenager. She was a longtime resident of the New Orleans area but moved after Hurricane Katrina to Baton Rouge to be close to her daughter. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, George Willard Walker Jr, her beloved brother Angél Ortiz, her grandmother~ who was her sweetest “Mamá”~Maria Rivera Colón, and her parents Placida Colón Ortiz and Manuel Ortiz. She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Lynn Walker (Matthew Perry), granddaughter, Rosalee McKenna Perry and her loving sister, Maria Ortiz. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Sol was fiercely independent, faith-driven, responsible, hard-working, loving, and feisty. In her youth, she loved to travel the world, try new things, take care of others, and just have fun. She was a proud long standing member of Beta Sigma Phi. She diligently worked to support her family as a homemaker and then a Medical Records Transcriptionist for Touro Infirmary in New Orleans from which she retired after many years. She always enjoyed attending church services, playing with her granddaughter, a good contagious “church giggle” (at something ridiculous when you know you shouldn’t laugh-but you just can’t stop), collecting squirrels, a good juicy hamburger, hot tea with loads of sugar, and watching “The Bachelor” and “Dr. Phil”. Simply put, she was the glue of our family and kept us moving forward through all of life’s difficult times. She is and will continue to be greatly missed. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. Metairie, LA. Visitation will be held from 11 am-1 pm with a service to begin at 1 pm. Interment will follow at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum. An online guestbook is available at www.LeitzEaganFuneralHome.com.
