Marie “Mary” Aline Sweet, passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2016, at her home in River Ridge, Louisiana. Beloved mother of Mary Odell Hervey (David), Juanita G. Landry (John), Michael R. Guillory and Peggy E. Labit. Grandmother of Anita Obenschain, Melissa Short, Rod Rhoto, Autumn Labit & the late Rachelle Guillory. Great-Grandmother of Zoe, Ronnie, Kelsey, Connor, Sawyer, Rexton & Isabel. Mary was born in Kaplan, Louisiana on October 8, 1931, to the late Albert & Leontine Abshire. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Elizabeth Bornmann, Elise Williams, Zoe Derouen, and brothers Wilfred (Sammy) & Michael Abshire. Mary was the President of the Friends of ALS, an organization very close to her heart, as three sisters, a niece and a nephew were stricken with this devastating disease. She was also fund raising chairman for the National Association of Patients on Hemodialysis and Transplantation (NAPHT) for several years, and raised over $500,000 to assist Kidney patients in the area. Mary lobbied on the national & state levels as the “voice of kidney patients” to protect their rights, and in November 1986, led a 13-bus caravan of kidney patients to Baton Rouge to protect Medicaid benefits related to their disease. Mary received the President’s award from Special Children and Privileged (SCAP), is a lifetime member of Amvets Post 49, and was very devoted to volunteering and fundraising for schools and several charities related to various disease research and family support. In lieu of flowers, donations to ALS and the Kidney Foundation of Louisiana are appreciated. The family would like to recognize St. Charles Parish Hospital Med surge nursing staff in Luling, Louisiana and Concerned Home Hospice nurse, Ms. Ann. for the special care they provided our mother.
Friends and relatives of the family are invited to attend visitation at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. Metairie Louisiana on Friday evening February 5, 2016 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm and visitation on Saturday morning February 6, 2016 from 9:00am till 11:00am. A Funeral Mass will be Saturday at 11:00 am in the Leitz-Eagan Chapel. Interment will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in St. Rose, Louisiana.
