On the absolutely beautiful, sunny, and mild afternoon of February 28, 2022, Larry William Tillman quietly, peacefully slipped away from the hands of his surrounding family holding tightly onto him and began his next journey. We are sure that his predeceased parents, Ruby Aucion Brauninger and Louis William Tillman reached out their hands at that same moment to welcome him.
Larry was born on November 26, 1948, a Friday. He would forever throughout his life consider Friday his favorite day of the week. His parents thought of him as a special gift. His childhood, upbringing, and young adulthood was nothing short of charmed. At an early age, Larry was lured by the promise that he might have athletic capabilities. He excelled especially in basketball and football. At 11, he was runner up for Mr. Biddy at the national competition. He went to St. Aloysius in 8th grade on a basketball scholarship but soon became more attracted to the football program and switched sports. He became the varsity QB and played that position through his senior year. Larry won many accolades for his gridiron performance and was heavily recruited by college teams, including West Point and Annapolis.
Despite receiving many football scholarship offers, Larry decided to stay close to home and attended Southeastern and then LSU New Orleans from where he graduated with a BS in Business Admin in 1971. He then pursued a career in the casualty insurance business from which he retired in 2011. He became an avid golfer in the early 80’s and was a member of Beau Chene Country Club for the last 24 years.
Larry is survived by his wife, love of his life, and best friend of 45 years, Deborah Savage Tillman; his sons and daughters-in-law, Brad Tillman, Allen Wright (Leslie), and Larry “Billy” Tillman, Jr. (Peyton); his grandchildren, Chandler and Shelby Tillman, his sister Judy Broussard Tillman, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law, Wilbert and Mary Savage; his sister, Constance Broussard Price; his brothers-in-law, Lester Robert Tillman and Albert James Savage, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Troy, Dirk, and Doug Tillman, his cousin, Scott Tillman, grandson, Chandler Tillman and grand-nephew Blake Tillman.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 11, 2022 at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. Metairie, LA. Visitation will be held from 11AM-1PM with a Mass to begin at 1PM. Internment will follow at St. Louis #3 Cemetery. There will be a celebration of his life at the home of his nephew, Doug Tillman following the services at 15 Idlewood Place, River Ridge, LA.
