A native of New Orleans, Louisiana. George was born to Sarah A. (Mullan) Whitlow and George E. Whitlow on June 11, 1928. He attended Holy Cross and Thibodaux College, later studying at Loyola University in New Orleans and Southeastern College in Hammond.
George was a proud member of the United States Marine Corp. He enlisted in April 1946 and saw active duty in Korea from 1950-1951. George was a forward observer with 4-Deuce Mortar Co., First Marine Division. He, along with his brother Charles, fought in the battle of Chosin Reservoir. He was a member of VFW Post 6640, Cooties Pup Tent 3, USMCR 10th Battalion, and Paul Boyd Marine Corp League.
Shortly before his deployment overseas in 1950, he married Joy Fernandez, the love of his life. They had a loving marriage that spanned 61 years and produced two children. In the mid-fifties, the family moved to Metairie and bought a home in the newly developed Westgate subdivision where he served for a time as president of the Westgate Country Club.
George was a salesman by trade...a good fit for someone with his ‘gift of gab’. He was employed at U.S. Rubber Company, S. C. Johnson, and Insituform Gulf South. He enjoyed an occasional round of golf and shooting the breeze with the guys at Claude’s Barbershop but was happiest spending time with his family. He was funny, loving, and generous.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joy, and brothers, Charles (late Ina Rae) and Alvin Whitlow. He is survived by his children, Barbara Hardin (Doug), and Kevin Whitlow (Terry), grandchildren, Johnny Minica (Christine), Michelle Minica, Jennifer Abadie, Lindsey Dantagnan (Ryan “Woody”), Stacey Bennett (Chad), Alison Hardin (Corey Francis), Daniel Hardin, and Max Whitlow.
