It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend. Ejerico "Jerry" David Fernandez Jr. of Metairie, LA passed away at East Jefferson General Hospital on Thursday, May 25th, 2023, at the age of 93.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ejerico Fernandez Sr, his mother, Ophelia DelRio Fernandez, his daughter, Debra Fernandez Loev and his son-in-law Robert Loev. He will be deeply missed by his wife Shirley Bossenmeyer Fernandez, his brother, Peter Reyes (Barbara), his granddaughter, Dana Loev Radu (Richard), great-grandchildren, Raphael Radu and Isabelle Radu, as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
Jerry was born in Tampa, FL, where, as a child, he collected and sold crabs for a nickel a piece. He could drive a car by the age of 8, and he joined the army at the age of 16. Yes, you read that correctly. He served during WWII as a Teletype mechanic in the Signal Corps. He later worked for Bellsouth and was an active member of the CWA union, serving as president. He loved skiing in Snowmass, CO, going to Morning Call, talking about politics and watching MSNBC with his cats. He and Shirley, who he affectionately called "Goldie," were married for 72 years, and his love for her was unmatched.
Friends and family are welcome to attend Jerry's graveside service at Metairie Cemetery (The Chapel Niches of Metairie Garden Estates) on Wednesday, June 14th, 2023, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Clean Air Task Force, https://www.catf.us in Jerry's honor.
