Dwayne Edward Hopkins passed away on Monday, March 20, 2023, after a long battle with renal cancer. Born on May 27, 1972, in Metairie, Louisiana Dwayne was the son of Carolyn Hopkins and the late Charles Hopkins. He attended DeLand High School where he was a member of the football and track teams along with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. At an early age, Dwayne became interested in automobiles and especially drag racing. Over the years, Dwayne owned, built, and raced various cars and trucks but was especially fond of his 1969 Chevrolet Camaro. An avid LSU sports fan, Dwayne was a regular at Hooter’s in Metairie viewing the games and cheering his Tigers on with family and friends. Though cars and LSU were a big part of Dwayne’s life, one of his greatest passions is his dogs Reese, Sophie, and Gracie. Dwayne was part of Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue where he fostered (and adopted) many dogs over the years giving so many a second chance at life that most do not get.
Dwayne is survived by his adoring wife Leona Miller Hopkins, his mother Carolyn Hopkins, his sister Denise Clarke, bother-in-law Robert Clarke, brothers Andrew Hopkins and Scott Hopkins, sister-in-law Marion Hopkins, nieces Julia Hopkins and Piper Batcheller, nephews Mitchell Batcheller, Logan Hopkins, and Alex Clarke along with many aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends. He is preceded in death by his father Charles “Butch” Hopkins, brother Albert Hopkins, nephew Owen Hopkins, paternal grandparents Ledrew and Zula Hopkins, and maternal grandparents Harry and Julia Code.
A true warrior, Dwayne leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, kindness, and the courage to take challenges head-on and never, ever give up.
