Carol Taylor Scherer went home to her Lord and Savior peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of December 12, 2023, at Covenant Nursing Home. She was born in Los Angeles on December 24, 1930 to William Treat Taylor of Buffalo, NY, and Gladys Buck Taylor of Bucks County, PA. She was raised in Santa Monica and Pasadena, CA. She attended the Cate School and then Mills College, where her love of the arts blossomed. She continued her prominent family’s tradition of world travel, particularly enjoying her explorations of Asia, Hawaii, and the Polynesian Islands.
Her travels inspired her lifelong interest and expertise in world cuisine. During her years in San Francisco she became friends with Victor Bergeron (“Trader Vic”) and with the American writer and gourmand, Lucius Beebe. She regaled her friends with stories of sitting in Trader Vic’s kitchen where she learned to create the fabulous dishes she shared throughout the years.
Carol fell in love with New Orleans where she met her husband, Doug Scherer, and commenced a well respected career as an interior designer which incorporated her experience with a myriad of cultures developed in her world travels.
She was a devoted member of Trinity Episcopal Church, active with the Women of Trinity Church and delighted all with her homemade cookies and cakes. Another of her passions was her love for the feline world focused particularly on rescuing cats and providing them with a loving home.
Carol was always “the hostess with the mostest,” especially at her legendary Christmas Eve dinner parties. She leaves behind many cousins and friends who will miss her. Her family and friends are particularly grateful to the wonderful nurses and staff of Covenant Home, whose care and kindness made Carol’s passing peaceful as she slipped away on her journey to the loving arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ.
Interment will be private.
