Calvin Dale Smith, age 89, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2014. Survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Sara Oliver Smith, his children Calvin Dale Smith, Jr. of Ottawa, Canada, Deborah Smith Frame (David) of Lafayette, La. and Donna Smith Bulliard (Marcel) of Lafayette, La. Step-Father of Virginia Erwin Sirera (Martin) of Mandeville, La., Margaret Erwin Manley (Nicholas) of Southaven, Ms., Elizabeth Erwin Pillow (Chip) of Germantown, TN. Special Grandfather of Sara McDiarmid, Christopher Bulliard, Philip Caronia, Jeff Bulliard, Alexis DeJean, Randall Bulliard, Calvin Frame, Zachary Sirera, Sara Grace Sirera, Susannah Sirera, Caroline Pillow, Carter Pillow, Sara Louise Manley, and Frances Manley. Also survived by 7 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents Emanuel Smith and Francis LeBlanc Smith, two brothers and two sisters. Calvin retired as District Manager for Eli Lilly & Company after 35 years working in Domestic and International Divisions of the company. He graduated from Lake Arthur High school, attended the University Of Louisiana Lafayette, graduated from the University of Houston with degrees in French, Chemistry and History, and graduated in the first graduating class of the University of Houston School of Pharmacy. He worked as a pharmacist for several years prior to joining Eli Lilly. After retiring he returned to school and became a Certified Financial Planner. He was the past president of the New Orleans Chapter of the American Association of Independent Investors. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Navy. He was a Co-Author of the book, "History of Lake Arthur". Calvin was a founding member of his every Thursday "Lunch Bunch", and of the C. & E. Investment Club. Cal was an avid tennis player into his late 70's; and all his friends and family loved to hear him tell his famous Cajun jokes. He was devoted to his friends and his children and grandchildren; but he was especially devoted to his wife Sara, and enjoyed their travels together through the years; especially the annual beach trip with all the children and grandchildren which had taken place every year for thirty years. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Celebration of Life Service at John Calvin Presbyterian Church, 4201 Transcontinental Dr., Metairie on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 10 a.m. Visitation from 9:30 until 10 a.m. The family wishes to thank Passages Hospice, especially Laurie Breaux and Jeannine McNeal for their loving care, and in particular Tim Rutledge who cared lovingly for Calvin the last months of his life.
