Reverend Verlyn Zell Smith age 88, born in Protection Kansas on June 8,1930 to the late Le Roy and Irma Smith. Verlyn went to be with the lord on December 21st, 2018 at Presbyterian hospital in Rockwall Texas.
He is preceded in death by his first wife of over fifty years Ollie Mae, his brother Siebert, sister Colleen, and grandson Lynn Smith II. He is survived by his brothers. Royce, Wylie and wife Louise of Kansas. His current wife of thirteen years Opal Smith. His children Steven Lynn Smith I and wife LaJuna, Roger and his wife Jimmie Lou, and daughter Tina Trotter and her husband John. Verlyn was blessed with many grandchildren Caleb and wife Laura, Brandon, Roger II, Justin and wife Fawn. His granddaughter Amanda and her husband Brad. Great grandchildren Steven Lynn III, Lainey, Stephanie, Darian, Logan, Chandler, Chassidy, Ayden, Brady, Maci, and Chaz.
He is survived by extended family from his second marriage. Randy and Karen Epps, Debra and Johnnie Tilley, Donna Grandstaff, Denise and Larry Bradley. Numerous other grandchildren and great grandchildren. Verlyn dedicated his life to serving God through Pastoral service. He served his Lord for over 70 years as minister at several Baptist churches in Dallas and Balch Springs area as well as Kansas. He served 10 years with T.A.N.E. ( A prison ministry). He was an active member at Lawson Rd. Baptist for 25 years were he taught Sunday school and lead in song services and was interim pastor several times. He also hosted bible study in his home on weekly basis. He is presently a member of Fellowship Baptist church of Balch Springs Tx. where he taught bible study on Sunday evenings and worked with seniors citizen's on the second Wednesday of each month.
He also served as a council member for six years (two as Mayor pro-teem) with the city of Balch Springs. Seven years ago he founded the Balch Springs Founder's Day celebration in support of the local food pantry and other local social services. This will carry on as a legacy to honor his ministry of service to God, family, and friends.
