Shirley was born July 5th in Uniontown, Kansas, to Bessie (Pauline) and Lawrence Cowan. She met and married her husband, Harold Culp Sr. in 1954. As Harold was in the Air Force, they lived and raised their four children in many different places including Alaska, Germany, and Ft. Scott, Kansas. They finally all settled in Balch Springs, Texas where she spent the remainder of her years.
While in Texas, she worked for Mid-America Business Forms, Safeway, and ultimately retired from the offices of JC Penny. After retirement, she enjoyed quality time with her family, including her eight grandchildren, all of whom have fond memories of her homemade pizza and firecracker personality. Shirley was also a lover of animals. She took in numerous strays throughout her years, opening up her garage to shelter and feed the neighborhood cats. As well as opening her home to the little dogs that would find their way to her. Many times her family would enter her home to the delicious scent of roasting chicken, only to learn it was meant for those little dogs.
Shirley is survived by her son, Kevan Culp and wife Rachel of Mesquite, Texas; Grandchildren Nathan Culp and Monica Brockman of Kansas City, MO; Samuel and Kylee Culp of Ft. Scott, Kansas; John Irvin Jr. of Dallas, Texas; Michael Book of Laurel, Indiana; Dusty Scott and Raven Culp of Mesquite, Texas; as well as 10 great-grandchildren and numerous other friends and loved ones.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Pauline and Lawrence; her husband, Harold Lloyd Culp Sr.; her sons, Harold Lloyd (Pete) Culp Jr., and Darryl Culp; and her daughter, Sherise Tuggle.
Services will be held Friday, July 15th at Anderson-Clayton-Gonzalez Funeral Home at 1111 Military Pkwy in Mesquite, Texas. Visitation will begin at 10am with funeral service at 11am.
