Donald Walter Zuber, age 79, passed away on November 4. He was born on August 21 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was adopted by Hans and Theresa Zuber and was raised in Madison, Wisconsin. Don attended and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1967. He married Marta Celia Arriola on March 3, 1973. They had one daughter Caryn Alyssa Blackwell (an accountant who currently works at Grant Thornton LLP).
Major Donald Walter Zuber served 20 years in the Air Force including a year in Vietnam and overseas tours in Okinawa and Germany. After he retired from the Air Force, he operated a franchise, Chelsea Street Pub and Grill in Alexandria, Louisiana for 11 years with his wife. After Donald and Marta Zuber sold the restaurant, they moved to Horseshoe Bay, Texas in 1998 and lived there until they ultimately relocated to Rockwall, Texas in 2019 to be closer to family.
Donald Walter Zuber was passionate about his family, cantankerous, quick tempered, exuberant, loud, opinionated, transparent, demanding, and unapologetic. He could cuss with the best of them and roar with laughter after a witty joke.
He was at his happiest on a family vacation, going out for dinner with his wife (especially if prime rib or cherry pie was involved), riding a roller coaster, skiing to the bottom of a hill, reading a great adventure or history novel, hiking in a National Park, or watching a movie with a huge tub of popcorn. He lived in Texas but he always considered Wisconsin his home. His passion for the Green Bay Packers and University of Wisconsin was beyond reproach.
Donald Walter Zuber is survived by his wife of 50 years Marta Zuber and his daughter Caryn Blackwell and her family, husband Jeffrey Blackwell and their two sons Thatcher Knox Blackwell (age 13) and Oakley Emerson Blackwell (age 9).
A celebration of life for Donald will be held Friday, November 10, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Anderson-Clayton-Gonzalez Funeral Home, 1111 Military Pkwy, Mesquite, Texas 75149.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Parkinson's Foundation.
