William “Joe” Mockbee, age 70, of Mesa, AZ passed away on October 8, 2017 after a long illness. Joe was born in Cairo, GA and was raised in Miami, FL. Joe was in the United States Army and served in Vietnam in 1968 in the 562nd Engineer Company. He was drafted into the Army in 1966. Following his honorable discharge from the Army in November of 1968, he married Diane, December 28, 1968 and enrolled in college in January of 1969. Joe graduated from Missouri Western State University in 1973 with B.S. Degree in Economics and retired as a Mortgage Underwriter in 2014.
Joe’s love for motorcycles never left him, even after two serious accidents, determined he would ride again, but his health deteriorated and he was unable to make that wish come true. Joe was a long-time member and Vice President of the Arizona Sun Chasers Motorcycle Club, a member of the American Legion Riders, Post 91 and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 15003.
Joe is preceded in death by his mother, Jeanne Kabel; father, Holmes Mockbee; brother, Guy Fullerton; and sister, Claudia Beth Kerns.
Joe is survived by his wife, Diane Mahan Mockbee, of almost 49 years. He is also survived by his daughter, Lisa Diane Lampe, her husband, Jim Lampe, and grandchildren, Hope Erickson, Josh Erickson, Paige Erickson and Brynn Erickson, and by his son, Sean Joseph Mockbee, his wife, Tara Mockbee and grandson, Brayden Mockbee.
Graveside services will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, Arizona, on October 20, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. Escort to the cemetery will be provided by the Arizona Patriot Guard Riders, The Arizona Sun Chasers and the American Legion Riders, Post 91 along with family members and friends for Joe’s final ride. Following the graveside service, there will be a Celebration of Life/Reception at American Legion Post 91, 922 N. Alma School, Chandler, Arizona from 11:00-1:00 p.m. There will be a brief presentation at the start by the Post Commander and Chaplain. Food will be provided by the Arizona Sun Chasers and a cash bar with bartender provided by Post 91.
