William “Bud” Bayless passed away on Friday, March 4th 2022 after a long battle with illness. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. He lived in Mesa, Arizona for over 6 years and he spent over 65 years in Oceanside, California with his family. He is survived by his wife Betty and sons, Randy, Marty, Larry and their wives and children. He was born on November 24th, 1931 to his father John Bayless and mother Vera Smith Bayless in Alex, Oklahoma. He had 7 siblings, Corrine, Thelma, Naoma, Maurice, Eulalah, Laverne and Ross.
After a 3 year courtship he married Betty in 1955. They briefly lived in Arizona before making their home in Oceanside, California. He started a career in barbering and spent over 59 years in that field. The majority of that time, he was a barber in Camp Pendleton. He was known for his speed and efficiency, making sure the recruits were always looking sharp. His reputation as a barber often gave him invitations to military functions.
During his time in Oceanside, he became a member of Masonic Lodge #381 which was the first step in a lifelong membership in the Freemasons. He achieved the title of Grand Master and was an active member for over 50 years, often asked to coach upcoming members on how to conduct themselves properly as upstanding members of the community.
He loved the outdoors, fishing and gardening. Of all his accomplishments, he was most proud of being a good provider to his family. As a barber, he had many faithful customers, many of which became good friends. He was known as a wonderful storyteller and enjoyed cracking jokes with his grandchildren. He will surely be missed.
