Warren Bissonnette passed away after a long illness on Sunday, September 29th, 2024, at the age of 81. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Betty Bissonnette; his brother, Wayne Bissonnette; his sister, Gail Bissonnette-Jones; and his six children: Mark, Bruce, Michael, Lea, Sherri, and Scott. He was the beloved and revered “Pepe” to his 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Warren was born in Plainfield, Connecticut, to parents Morin and Juliette Bissonnette, where he spent his formative years. He met the love of his life at the tender age of 16 and married her in 1961, following his graduation from the US Navy’s Submarine School.
Warren Bissonnette dedicated 21 years to the US Navy, earning multiple honors throughout his distinguished career. He was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Expert Pistol Ribbon, Expert Rifle Ribbon, and numerous Good Conduct medals.
Warren served in various critical roles, including Chief of the Watch, Diving Officer, Chief Torpedoman, Small Arms Instructor, Missile Crew Key Holder, and Anti-Sniper for President Gerald Ford. Known for his problem-solving skills, he was the go-to person for any challenge.
At the request of the Commanding Officer of the USS Fulton, Warren invented and implemented a groundbreaking process to repair the USS Philadelphia’s Torpedo Hoist Cylinder. This innovative solution, which was initially turned down by a private shipyard due to its complexity, became the first of its kind for any tender and was later patented by the US Navy.
In 1981, after retiring from the military, Warren made Arizona his home. He fell in love with the Southwest while helping his parents, brother Wayne, and sister Gail settle into their new home, and he never looked back.
Warren embraced the Arizona lifestyle wholeheartedly, proudly wearing a cowboy hat and carrying his trusty 45. He settled his family at the base of the Superstition Mountains, where he found peace and joy in the great outdoors.
An avid sportsman, Warren spent his free time with his children, grandchildren, friends, and family, engaging in activities such as fishing, hunting, horseback riding, or simply enjoying the view of the Superstition Mountains from his backyard. Nature was his sanctuary.
Warren was also an active member of the Rio Salado Sportsman Club, serving on the board and as Director for black powder and lever action matches. A competitive marksman, he consistently earned top honors in local and state competitions. He cherished the time spent with friends at the RSSC and was at the range, shooting a match just 10 days before his passing.
Warren's legacy of love, dedication, and excellence will be remembered by all who knew him.
