Born September 2, 1949 in Hugo, Oklahoma to Christina Candler and Lewis Owens.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents and siblings RJ Akins, Vernon Owens, and John "Ricky" Owens. He leaves behind his siblings Ruby Jewel Akins-Ladell, Thomas Owens, Wren Owens, Alice Faye Owens, and Ardis Owens; his wife Ruby Owens; three daughters with Rosie-Patricia, Mechile, and Paula, and a son he raised as his own, David. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Robert attended Chandler High School, where he played football.
Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1971 at a young age, he served with distinction in the 3rd Infantry Division during the Vietnam War. Known for his quiet strength and unwavering commitment, Robert participated in daring Eagle Flight missions, navigating the perilous terrain along Highway 1. These missions demanded both bravery and a deep sense of purpose.
Robert embodied every day, returning home to a complex societal response to the war, Robert completed six years of military service and retired.

A viewing for Robert will be held Friday, November 15, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Lakeshore Mortuary, 1815 South Dobson Road, Mesa, AZ 85202. A celebration of life will occur immediately following the viewing at 11 AM. A graveside will occur at 2 PM at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 2929 E Pinnacle Peak Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85024.
