He met the love of his life, Ann, in high school, while Merlyn was playing basketball. Ann was always in the stands with her best friend, who had a crush on another basketball player. The girls decided to go out with the guys one day and Merlyn and Ann have been in love ever since. They were married on June 18, 1960. They spent a total of fifty eight years adoring each other. Merlyn was outgoing and athletic, turning down a career in baseball to go to college. He has a magic about him, something that drew people to him. A comforting soul, Merlyn mentored many people. The caring advice he shared changed lives. Merlyn truly made a huge impact on anyone he met. To meet him was to like him. He was a volunteer at Banner Heart Hospital, where he wanted to help people that were struggling with heart related issues like he had. The patients all loved him and wanted to know when he was coming back to work. While Merlyn was in the hospital, the nurses would remark how “cute” Merlyn was and how he never complained. The doctors admired his courage and how he fought all the way to the end. Family was the center of Merlyn’s life. He adored his wife, cherished his children, enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and was a loyal friend. The hearts of those who knew Merlyn will forever be touched by his charismatic personality.
