Adored by her loving family, Maria Cristina, age 87, of Mesa, Arizona passed away on Friday, May 24, 2024. She is survived by her son, Hector; her daughter-in-law, Lisa; their 3 children, Brandi, Midori, and Benny; and 3 great-grandchildren, Jakob, Malia, and Ridley.
Maria was born in Colombia and over concerns over civil war she was fortunate to make the trip to the United States. She resided in Southern California for many years where she met her first love, Camilo, with whom she raised her only son, Hector. She and Camilo stayed together for many years until they separated in the late 80's. Years later, she met her second love, Raul. They enjoyed many years together, but due to concerns over Cristina's health, Raul and Cristina relocated to Arizona where Raul passed away. Cristina continued to live with her son, daughter-in-law. and grandson. enjoying the company of friends, neighbors, and family. She was always on the phone speaking with her friends from California until her passing.
From the time Cristina came to America, she was always surrounded by children. Her first vocation here was taking care of another family and even as she began her own family, she was helping others with their children as well. She lived long enough to be around her grandchildren into their adulthoods and celebrated many holidays with their children.
In the end, Maria lost her battle with lung cancer. It was never diagnosed until it was far too advanced for any type of treatment, but she fought beyond every doctor's expectations. Lisa, her daughter-in-law and registered nurse, provided the best care anyone could have asked for as we all endured these difficult times.
We are left with so many memories, gift items she knitted and never got the chance to give away, Knick knacks she collected throughout the year, and not to forget, her memorable, "Ay ay Ay!"
Mom, you will be missed.
