Louis Mitchell Krenz, 80, of Mesa, AZ, passed away on July 1, 2023. He was born on August 4, 1942, in Morris, MN, to the late Ruben and Edith Krenz. He was the oldest child of 3, with Marlys and Tim, growing up in Hancock, MN. He attended primary school and high school there. At a young age, Lou was known for his athleticism and determination.
After marrying Karen Kathleen (Anderson) in 1961, Lou finished his education degree from Moorhead State College (now Minnesota State University, Moorhead). Together they had 4 wonderful children of whom they were so proud: Karn, Kel, Mitchel, and Mindy. Aside from a brief career departure in insurance, Lou had an illustrious vocation working for the YMCA, dedicating over 35 years primarily as an Executive Director; beginning his Y career in Wichita, KS, and eventually ending this Y career at Hamilton County YMCA outside of Chattanooga TN. He also served in Sioux City, IA, Beatrice, NE, Quincy, IL, and Kokomo, IN. He made many friends in each of these places and had a significant impact on each of these communities.
Louis was a caring and compassionate man, known for his loving nature and deep faith. He and Karen were faithful members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America wherever they resided, and served on Stephen's Ministry teams when they could. Lou served as a deacon at Christ Lutheran Church in Quincy, Illinois. Louis was a contemplative and prayerful man. He loved to write and collect inspirational writings. His collection is part of his legacy to his family.
Lou had a wide range of interests and hobbies including coin collecting, camping, woodworking, model trains, and traveling. Lou loved working on projects, many of which were gifts to his grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing games, sports, and cards with his friends and family. Viewing sports, especially the Minnesota Vikings, became a great pastime in his later years, as well as attending his grandchildren's activities. While living in Arizona he became very active in Leisure World clubs including the Rovers R.V. Club, Democrat Club, and Woodworking Club, to name a few.
Upon retiring in 2005, Lou and Karen moved to Springfield IL to be closer to their kids and grandkids. They wintered in Florida and Arizona for several years before purchasing a home in Leisure World (Mesa, AZ.)
After Karen passed in 2015, Lou moved permanently to Arizona and later found love and a new vigor for life with Elyce Yunowich, of Mesa, AZ. They married in 2020 in Las Vegas, NV, surrounded by loved ones. They shared so many interests, and she was devoted to him and cared lovingly for him to the end. With Elyce came additional family including the memory of her son James (deceased); and daughter Jeanne and husband Paul Jerks of Green Bay, WI, and their two children Malcolm and Mackenzie.
