Columbia Street (Yorktown Road) Church of Christ in 1963. She was born away to Heaven
from Mesa, Arizona on January 6, 2021 surrounded by family at age 85.
Joan graduated from Media High School in Indiana. She was married to Lester Piercy
on January 22, 1954. Lester preceded her in death as did their daughter, Debora. She is
survived by her son Larry and daughter-in-law June Piercy and daughter Darla and son-in-law
Neil Stewart. Joan has five grandchildren and their spouses; Meghan and Jonathan Teel, Lisa
and Daniel Fenwick, Courtney and Drew Price, Robbie and Samone Stewart, and Kelsey
Piercy. She has ten great grandchildren; Bradan, Neveah, Matthias, Adam, Asher, Ezra, Joel,
Malachi, Jackson and Mylah.
Joan worked at Sears Robuck & Company until beginning a family. She was a mother
and housewife until her children were all in school. She then worked in the food service
industry in Walton and Logansport, Indiana, and finally as an assistant manager of an
apartment complex in Mesa, Arizona.
Lester and Joan moved from Indiana to Arizona in 1994 where they enjoyed their
children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, semi-retirement, church involvement, and Blue
Grass Music. Joan finally fully retired in 2006 following Lester's death. She continued to
provide aid and encouragement to others around her even in retirement.
Joan often offered humorous quips when speaking with others. Many enjoyed stopping
to see her because you never knew what funny thing she might say, they remarked. She had
a unique vocabulary, making up funny names for behaviors and objects. They said, “She
always kept me on my toes!”.
Joan continued as an active member of the church of Christ throughout her life. She
taught Bible classes, helped build a church building, performed cleaning, processed the
church bulletin, and was involved in Ladies Bible Class at Mesa Church of Christ until a year
prior to her death.
Joan's family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Alzheimer's Disease
Research and/or AASK (Arizona Aid to the Adoption of Special Kids).
A memorial service to celebrate Joan's life and to pay respects will be held at a later
date after current restrictions are lifted.
