John Carl Nix, 86, passed away peacefully at his home on May 15, 2010 surrounded by his family. John was born Feb. 26, 1924 in Phoenix, AZ the son of John G. Nix and Norma (Guthrie) Nix. John was a second generation Arizona native. He attended Riverside Elementary School and graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1942. John served as a school board member for Riverside School for 28 years. In 1942 John married Margaret Stewart, also an Arizona native. John entered the Army in 1944, serving in France and Germany the last year of the war. When John returned to civilian life he partnered with his father operating the family dairy, located at 43rd Ave. and Lower Buckeye Road. Over the years he raised cattle in Phoenix and Ajo and grew cotton. In the late 40’s, John fondly remembers driving cattle from the west side ranch through central Phoenix to Scottsdale. Needless to say, this created a bit of excitement. The Phoenix ranch was sold in 1984 and John and Margaret moved to East Mesa. John was a man of many interest and hobbies, but family always remained the center of his life.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret, daughter: Cheryl Crow (Sam), son: John (Susie) Nix. His daughter Patricia preceded him in death. He has 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, sisters: Cheryl Long, Jean Wright and Mary Lou Elliot and a brother David Nix.
