Jay Jeffrey had three passions: engineering, speed, and freedom; and found endless ways to combine them in a career that began back in high school. In the late 60’s and early 70’s, in the heyday of muscle cars, Jay was known as Mr. Javelin at Grosse Pointe South. He developed a gear head’s intuition for making things go faster, including a passion for motorcycles.
Jay started his career at Grosse Pointe South in Maintenance & Boiler Room Operations on January 5, 1981. He proved himself to be a quick study and a natural at engineering, attaining multiple trainings and certifications that propelled him to Plant Manager and Chief of Operations for the Grosse Pointe Schools.
He oversaw the installation of massive replacement boilers at Grosse Pointe South to heat the school and coordinated with Johnson Controls to oversee the installation of fiber optics in the school he said, “was built like Fort Knox.”
Personally, and professionally, Jay was kind and generous, always ready to lend a helping hand to family and friends. An avid boater, Jay rebuilt the docks on his property in Saint Clair Shores, Michigan, on the canal and loved fishing and being out on the water.
Jay retired from Grosse Pointe Schools on August 31, 2010. He continued his engineer career at JSJ Consulting until he moved with his wife to Arizona in 2016 to be closer to his son and daughter-in-law. He soon was blessed with four grandchildren. He continued to enjoy his summers with family in Maine. He so loved being outdoors.
Jay was a kind, beautiful and stoic man who will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his son Jason (Candace) Jeffrey; grandchildren Nova, Brecken, Stella, and
Sebastian; siblings Debra (Michael) Briolat, Stephanie Galvin, Adria (Tony) Kryscynski and Devon
Jeffrey; seven nieces and nephews; and his sweet dog Spencer.
He is preceded in death by his wife Karen Rae Jeffrey; his parents Barbara and John Jeffrey; grandparents; and sweet dog Winston.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 24th, 2023, at The Pub 1281 located at 1281 Gratiot Ave Clinton Twp, MI 48036 from 5:00 PM-8:00 PM honoring Jay and his late wife, Karen Jeffrey.
