He was born on July 30, 1935, the eldest of 4 children to Herbert James and Thelma (Stambuck) Martin in Sacramento, California, where he was also raised. He graduated from high school in 1953 in Sacramento, and he joined the United States Marine Corps, at the age of 17 after high school. He did his basic training in San Diego, and was in the Korean conflict. Served two tours in Vietnam, received the medal of valor during the Vietnam conflict and was commissioned, and then retired as a Captain. He retired from the Marines in 1970 after 22 years of honorable and faithful service, and moved to the Pacific Northwest to work for US Bank Corp., as a security operations supervisor. He and his wife Bev had bought a fifth wheel after his retirement, and together they visited the United States, all but 2 of them, on their travels. On September 24, 2003, he married his longtime friend Nancy Ellen Clark. For their 10th wedding anniversary, they travelled to Maui to renew their vows. Jim loved working with wood, and had a shop at his home in Twin Palms AJ. He also loved weaving cane chairs. He was an avid bowler, he had bowled a 289 game, silencing the bowling alley, leaving only the ten pin to prevent his perfect game. Jim loved going to the country music jam sessions and listening to his wife Nancy sing . He also loved calling bingo with his booming voice at Twin Palms park, and enjoyed the company of Shelby and Joshy “big guy”, the family Yorkies.
Jim is survived by his wife Nancy; sons, Jim Martin Jr. (Michelle), Ron Martin (Joan), Scott (Ann), Brian, and Terry; step daughters Leslie Cochran (Gary), Teri Enyeart, Shannon Goodman (Channing); brother, Steve Martin; sister, Marie Irwin (Bill); 15 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Herbert, son Dale, former wife Bev, mother Thelma and his sister Lucille.
A viewing/ visitation will be held on Thursday, June 23, from 8 am until 10 am at Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park, followed by the funeral service at 10 am.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the kidney foundation.
