James "Jim" Campbell, 78, of Mesa, Arizona, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2025, following a tragic fall on February 6, 2025. While walking his cherished dog, Jovi, Jim lost his balance, sustaining a severe head injury that led to paralysis. After two months of brave endurance, he departed this world surrounded by love late that Saturday afternoon.
A proud U.S. Navy veteran, Jim served as Boiler Technician (BT3) on a Fletcher-class Destroyer, the USS Porterfield DD682, in the fire room, 1965 to 1969, including two combat tours in Vietnam. He received both the National Defense Service medal and the Vietnam Service medal with one Bronze Star. His service was just one chapter in a life devoted to his country, evident in his fervent support for President Trump. Often seen in his Vietnam Veteran cap or beloved Trump hat, Jim greeted kindred spirits with a warm handshake and a twinkle in his blue eyes. A steadfast Second Amendment advocate, he upheld his Federal Firearms License with integrity as a respected dealer for many years.
Jim dedicated decades as a heavy equipment mechanic for Salt River Project, retiring in 2009. Even in retirement, he sported his signature blue work uniforms, a nod to his industrious spirit. He lived with zest, whether embarking on travel adventures, sharing stories, or savoring quiet moments at home.
Renowned for his quick wit and infectious laugh, Jim spoke his own playful dialect, dubbed "Campbell-ese," delighting friends with quirky nicknames like Bubba, Fart Blossom, Fire-butt, Girl, and Good-un. His sparkling blue eyes danced with joy when a clever quip landed, spreading laughter to all around him.
On February 17, 2007, Jim married his soulmate, Cindy, forging a bond of deep love and shared adventures. Together, they wove a tapestry of countless memories, from grand escapades to tender, everyday moments. Their love was a rare and beautiful gift.
Born July 8, 1946, in Miami, Arizona, Jim grew up in the Globe, Claypool, and Miami area, rooted in the rugged beauty of his hometown. He was a devoted father to Robert Campbell (Michelle) and Shannon Campbell. Grandfather to Casey and Colin Campbell, and Blue Wood. Jim is also survived by his siblings Judy Campbell Slade (Keith) and Dennis Campbell (Cheri). He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Sylvia Campbell, and brothers Robert, Kenny, and David Campbell.
Jim’s legacy shines through his loyalty, service, humor, and unwavering love for family, friends, and country. Though his absence leaves a profound void, his spirit lives on in every hearty laugh, warm embrace, and cherished memory. He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend—and so much more.
Until we meet again, Jim, may your laughter echo in our hearts.
A visitation for James will be held Friday, April 25, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 6747 E Broadway Rd, Mesa, AZ 85206, followed by a reception from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
