Harriette was born in 1920 in Bethel, Vermont. She grew up with a younger sister, Barbara Stacey and attended Franklin high School later graduating from the Maine Medical Center School of Nursing. In 1945, she married, Garvin "Slim" McDonald. Harriette and Slim parented 4 children, Barbara, Brenda, Gary, and Larry.
Her nursing career, spanning 40 years, was sometimes interrupted due to being an Army wife and frequent moves to different Army posts. Harriette spent the last 20+ years of her career working in the Indian health services where she loved working in pediatrics with the Indian children. Harriette was most known for her kind, forgiving ways, always giving others more than the benefit of the doubt. She was always the life of the party with her sense of humor and her vibrant and colorful fashion sense. She loved children and babies.
After retirement she started art classes, which she enjoyed for many years and has supplied her family and friends with numerous oil paintings. She also greatly enjoyed travel, having taken many trips to visit family in Maine and Florida.
Harriette is survived by all four children as well as thirteen grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren, with 2 more on the way. She is preceded in death by her husband, Slim; her parents and her sister Barbara Stacey.
Per Harriette's wishes, she will be cremated and a private celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, June 5th. The family will be scattering the ashes of Harriette and Slim at a later date in Portland, Maine, where they met and spent their early lives together. The family is grateful for the condolences, but declines flowers and donations. Your prayers, positive memories and reflections would be the greatest honor and would be the most appreciated by Harriette.
