Hal was born March 9, 1931 in Colville, WA to Harold Sr. and Lucille Davis White. He grew up and attended school in Colville and Walla Walla, WA, and graduated from Pendleton, OR High School in 1949. After having been a part of Junior ROTC in high school, he joined the US Army National Guard and US Army Reserve, eventually retiring as a Captain. Hal attended the University of Oregon where he became a member of Kappa Sigma and earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, and then went on to earn a PhD from the University of Florida. He taught at Idaho State University, and Retired from Arizona State University after 27 years as a Professor in the College of Business, also having served a term as ASU Faculty Senate President during his tenure.
As a devout Catholic from an early age, Hal was an active member of Resurrection Catholic Church Tempe parish, participating in daily Mass and serving in the Knights of Columbus. His hobbies included reading, especially historical nonfiction, and traveling, having visited Africa, China, Russia, Europe, Mexico, and much of the U.S. He became a resident at Friendship Village Tempe in 2017, where he remained as admirably active as possible, despite some health and mobility limitations, enjoying continued old friendships and making new friends.
Hal is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Lucile Angell White in 2012. He is survived by daughter Angela White, grandson Hal Semmens, granddaughter Ayn Semmens Collins, her husband Chris, 3 great grandchildren, brothers and sisters-in-law James and Betty Lou Cobain, and Stewart and Susan Cobain, and many nieces and nephews.
Hal’s family suggests donations be made in his memory to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (StVincentdePaul.net).
A visitation for Harold will be held Tuesday, January 3, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, with Rosary to be held at 4:00 PM at Lakeshore Mortuary, 1815 South Dobson Road, Mesa, AZ 85202. A funeral mass will occur Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at 10:00 AM Resurrection Catholic Church, 3201 S Evergreen Rd, Tempe, AZ 85282. Hal will be laid to rest at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, 1562 E Baseline Rd, Mesa, AZ 85204.
