At a very young age, he and his family relocated to New Mexico, where he graduated from Rio Grande High School in Albuquerque, NM, in 1962. Following high school, Fred went on to Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Arts in music education. He went on to take a position as a music teacher in Ganado, AZ, and Fort Defiance, AZ, teaching both instrumental and vocals. While in Ganado, Fred met the love of his life, Francine Jeannine Hagberg; Fred and Francine married on December 20, 1969, and started their family, having two children, Jennifer and Christopher. Fred and his family later moved to Gallup, NM, where he served as an administrator with the Gallup McKinley County school system for 21 years, working as an Assistant Principal and then as a Principal until retiring. After retirement, the family moved to Mesa, AZ, where Fred enjoyed a rewarding post-retirement position at J.O. Combs Middle School in Queen Creek, AZ. He started the band program at Combs Middle School, and was the Band Director for six years. Fred was also very involved with the Mesa City Band for five years, playing the trumpet. Fred was a very family-oriented man, and most of his interests were borne out of his childrens' hobbies and activities.
