Fred graduated from Beaumont High School in St. Louis, Missouri in 1968. He served in the United States Air Force for a short time but discharged early due to medical reasons. After his military discharge Fred returned to his birthplace, Mississippi to pursue a career in cosmetology. He graduated from Utica Junior College Cosmetology School in Utica, MS. Fred became a licensed technician and instructor at the college. He enjoyed his time at Utica however, he decided to move to Arizona to further his cosmetology career. He earned a certification from the Arizona State Board of Barbers and worked as a barber for many years in the Metro Phoenix area.
Later in life Fred chose to slow down his work pace and began a position at Phoenix Elementary School District as a bus assistant, helping special needs children get to and from school safely. Fred was a fun-loving guy, he loved to attend family gatherings and talk about the old times, his favorite stories were about his grandfather, who he is named after. He would always say “Granddaddy was my buddy; we would spend hours talking and fussing about the silliest things”.
Fred had some health challenges, but he kept going as much as he could, he was unexpectedly called home to be with the Lord on June 6, 2022. Fred was a beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. He will be missed by those who loved him. May he forever rest in peace.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents, Johnny and Louella Lewis. Fred is survived by his brother Calvin L. Lewis of Detroit, MI. and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
A memorial service for Fred will be held Friday, June 24, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Lakeshore Mortuary, 1815 South Dobson Road, Mesa, AZ 85202.
